Amendola on the EU – United in Brussels for Ukraine, common energy and defence

23 March 2022

"The Italian government will go to Brussels with a strong mandate from Parliament at a crucial time for Europe and beyond. The Chamber of Deputies and the Senate passed the resolution set forth by the majority and some proposals by the opposition, in view of the European Council of 24 and 25 March. We will continue to ensure support and solidarity to the Ukrainian people wholeheartedly and without looking the other way." These are the words conveyed by Vincenzo Amendola, Undersecretary for European Affairs, after Parliament gave the green light to the proposal. Russia's aggression against Ukraine, refugee management, energy, and the need to reduce dependence on Russian gas supply, EU's protection capacity and security are some of the main items on the agenda tomorrow and the day after. "The European Union is coping with the consequences of the conflict cohesively: common defence and energy union are priority objectives," Amendola underlined.
