Infringements, eight procedures opened for failure to transpose EU directives

3 February 2022

On 27 January, the European Commission opened eight new infringement procedures for failure to transpose EU directives.

The directives referred to by the Commission include new rules for protecting those persons who report breaches of EU law, the modernisation of EU consumer protection rules, requirements for investment firms to support recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, and common noise assessment methods.

With the eight new cases, the number of infringements against Italy rises to 110, 55% of which are at the first stage of the procedure, the so-called "formal notice" (letter) which, as regulated by Article 258 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), is the phase in which the Commission provides a first formal allegation of the contested objections to the Member State, granting it two months to submit its observations.

The environment remains the sector with the highest incidence of infringements (20% of the total), followed by economic and financial affairs and transport.
