The Undersecretary for European Policies and Affairs, Sandro Gozi, and the European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, signed a "Common Understanding" on 3 June 2016, aimed at strengthening the State Aid partnership between Italy and the European Commission, on the one hand, and between national administrations at all levels, on the other.

In compliance with the ownership of single administrations granting the aid, the document aims to enhance the administrative capacity and, therefore, the autonomy of relevant administrations, and strengthen the coordinating role of the Department, in order to ensure correct and uniform application of the rules.

The importance of the partnership and the prospects for its implementation were at the centre of the European Commission's Country Visit on 4 April 2017
